hey guys welcome back to the channel you're watching code ray and today we have a very special guest with us it's peter he works at bain and company and it's a consulting firm it's actually one of the best consulting firms so i know there's a lot of people and students out there who are thinking about maybe switching their careers or thinking about what they want to do for the rest of their life so i wanted to create this video for you guys to give you a guys insight into our experiences in our respective fields and what kind of people that we think would look good for those specific fields to help provide you guys with information and help you guys make your decision on whether you should go into say a more technical role in software engineering or a more strategy role in consulting okay so here are some of the topics that i wanted to touch upon in our video and i will also put the time codes for these topics inside the description so make sure to look out for that if you're looking for a specific topic so another reason why i wanted to make this video is because when i was a student and also like after graduating there was a lot of times when i thought about like do i actually want to be a software engineer or what role do i want to go into so i made a video on switching from pre-med to software engineering but in that process i looked between investment banking consulting software engineering pre-med and like various other fields and because one of them was consulting i really wanted to actually become a consultant but i had to juggle between whether i wanted to be a software engineer or consultant so that's why i wanted to make this video for you guys without further ado let's get started okay first question so what kind of person is right for your industry and i'll get started so i think for anyone who's looking into software engineering the right type of person to go and become a software engineer you have to be pretty technical you have to be able to basically problem solve a lot so a lot of problems that are in software engineering you have to continuously work on so if you're a type of person who is a pretty technical person who likes making something by themselves or who has like the creativity to basically build projects and possibly want to make the world a better place or want to solve many issues in the technology field then i think software engineering is for you you have to be a person that's very like determined and also a person who doesn't like giving up in order to tackle these problems because a lot of these problems are also very hard to tackle in the end and sometimes you might not get it on the first try or maybe even 100 try so like people who are very technical and people who love to solve problems i think are people who are well deserved for software engineering but let's go to peter for consulting yeah i think thank you ray for all the i guess like trace that a good software engineer will have and i think consulting is definitely similar but different in different ways i would say the number one trade you will win a consultant is international curiosity like what we do basically is think about we are a brain outside a business or a company right we look at a company and it's problems from outside in and we try to help the business owners to really solve the problem to do that you'd be super passionate about like business property in general the financials how business talk about or think about markets how they think about their own employees and organization and all these kind of questions you need to keep drilling down those questions as a job in consulting and if you think that's something that you want to do i think consulting is definitely for you and i think another thing that's going to be very interesting is like if this is a job you're definitely going to talk to a lot of different people like even for me as a junior consultant part of my job also in spoken involves talking to partners which is like very significant at my own firm as well as ceos or other c3 people on the other side of the business so if you are not scared or even you enjoy talking about you know i guess things you learned to people and transferring your knowledge to people in different contexts in different positions consulting would definitely fall but will be a very good podium for you as well next question how hard is it to switch into career and your specific industry so specifically for software engineering i definitely think it's very doable to switch into software engineering i think for anyone of any industry as long as you go home and if you don't know any programming language it's also definitely doable just be sure to go online get a few certifications in a specific programming language or learn a programming language do a few side projects and get as much exposures as you can to the technical space and then basically start networking interviewing and i definitely think you'll be able to land a position in the software engineering industry so i definitely don't think it's hard for those of you who are thinking about switching into a career in software engineering and any students who maybe think they're too late to switch into software engineering or computer science it's definitely doable and i have done it before let's go to peter yeah i think for consulting i would say the best way to break into the industry is if you are say a sophomore a second year or junior third year student thinking about going in this industry you know the best way is you can do some internships in business or even other things that you can again as i said before help you understand and solve complex questions in real life as long as you're doing that kind of stuff i think you definitely stand a very good chance going to consulting and for those of you with more advanced degrees if you are say a phd mba or sort of masters master's degree students you definitely have a chance as well going to consulting because these firms are always looking for students who have more sophisticated structure of knowledge or a very good sort of understanding of one single industry or vertical so i think it really depends on i guess your background but consulting is an industry that takes in people in bulk from different entry points especially after like the i guess like the end of an academic program so always on the lookout for consulting firms recruiting because they tend to come to campus and a lot of fanfare really big you know and then they have very clear recruiting timelines just like tech so i think as long as you're looking out for that and trying to crap your story and trying to you know keep solving questions you see in life and make an impact i think consulting firms so definitely would love to you know take a look at you and hopefully you can get into those firms awesome thank you okay so next question is a pretty good question that i was pretty curious about when i was starting off in figuring out if i should be a consultant or a software engineer it's what is the work-life balance at both these companies what is the workload of both of these industries i think there's a wide range of opinions about software engineering but i think relatively with the experiences that i've had i think software engineering has a relatively decent light to decent course load i have a lot of software engineering fans who are in startups versus top tech companies versus in legacy companies and a lot of them report to around basically just regular 40-hour work weeks or work days i mean work weeks and they basically can go and do a lot of the other things that they want to outside of the work and it's really helpful because a lot of these people they have other hobbies and stuff but on the caveat i do know there's some teams and there's some various companies who do have a more worse work-life balance and they work a lot longer whether it's for on-call or it's for specific projects to meet deadlines so i think that turns people off a lot but i definitely don't think work like balance is something that you should be turned off about about software engineering because i definitely think that if you want to prioritize software engineering you'll be able to definitely find a company and a team that will suit your needs yeah i will say on the consulting side the short answer is slightly longer on average work within software engineers but still a pretty good work-life balance compared to similar industries so i think one key difference between software engineering and consulting is software engineering you tend to work for your own company whereas consulting and some of the other industries that people call professional services you your clients are companies you work for a consulting firm sure but your company as a whole work for another company and that brings like a little bit of i guess up and downs and swings in your hours like for me i would expect something like i would say 50 to maybe 55 hours per week but it can swing from time to time like worst times it would be something like over 60 but sometimes it could also be under 50. but that being said i would say i still have quite a bit of time just like chilling like like when i get up work and when i live with randy like i also do some stuff we do we watch tv together i also you know i read a lot of books i want i also run other communities and like you know social media groups outside of consulting and i know for fact that some of my colleagues they run podcasts they work for non-for-profits they even work for you know other interest projects anything from like being a tour guide in new york city to like mapping out trees in the parks downstairs so like it's really like you have a lot to do and i would say one more thing that's different from tech which is consulting allows you to travel a lot obviously 2020 is a little bit of a bummer but usually like consulting especially you work for clients elsewhere we are talking about like flying in and out like of your home city on a weekly basis so i could be in new york you know monday morning to attend a meeting catch a flight in the afternoon to go to san francisco stay in san francisco with client for three days come back from the ufo and happy hour on friday so it's very location flexible i guess not flexible location like fluid which is really cool if you are not you know if one of those people want to explore the world with consulting the next question is a question that a lot of you guys i guess wanted to hear it's like what is the salary like for both of these industries and for software engineering i think it's there's a definitely a huge ban of salaries that you can have because i know that the average median wage for a software nigeria is around a hundred thousand dollars reported in 2020 um but there's a lot of companies that pay way less than that and a lot of these salaries are based only in the united states so essentially you have to work in the united states in order to get a very high salary in tech which is like why there's like silicon valley and all these huge booms and tech cities coming up in the u.s but for a top tech company and a lot of startups um new grads or like people who just recently graduated or a lot of people who just switched into software engineering as entry-level software engineers can make upwards of 150 000 and even more than that so there's like a huge range but definitely the salary for like a software engineer can range from like like below like 70 000 for like a lot of average software engineers to like maybe like top tech companies or startups can pay upwards of 200 000 and that was another thing that like actually motivated a lot of other people or a lot of my friends to go into software engineering because it's a very stable job and it provides you with a lot of monetary value with it and also i think that with software engineering like the growth there a lot of people talk about there being a ceiling for software engineering and that is true for a lot of companies but i think like as times are changing a lot of these like top tech companies and startups have been giving like more stocks out have been giving more money out so like as you work there for longer and longer you seem to be getting a decent amount of money in which you can have a really good life i would say for consulting um it's again like software engineering it really varies a lot depending on which firm you're at and which stage of career you're in i would say so if we talk about the entry level i would say uh the average or median salary will probably be a little bit lower than software engineering however still very much comfortable and should i say like about much more about average in i guess in the u.s at a better list i i would say that if you start in consulting like you tend to you have a pretty comfortable life compared to your peers like regardless where you start so and then another thing that's interesting about consulting is if you keep going in this career um like the the curve of i guess your salary growth is gonna keep going up so like even though in the beginning it's definitely not one of the top top paid sort of a career out there still if you keep going in your firm for 10 15 even 20 years you will probably be in like a very very comfortable place by the time you're there and i guess also having a very rich and diverse life with a lot of stories to tell right because they deal with so many different businesses as well and i guess another interesting thing about consulting is like our i guess compensation is never fully just monetary a lot of times it's about the experience you have because with a lot of larger international consulting firms there is a building element you can go exchange at different offices at different functions and things like that it's not uncommon to hear people like from not just u.s or worldwide going to for example another office on a continent they've never been to or going to like even doing an externship in another company and come back to your company later on and also by the way if you want to pursue mba or like certain graduate programs your company will tend to sponsor you to do that and then have you back to the company after you're done with the program and i would say lastly uh consulting i would say just like software engineering is one of the really big theater industries into startup which means it's very easy for you to switch into doing startup or something even higher growth obviously taking a little bit more risk and i guess go for higher compensation so there is always that possibility there so what is the general path like or general opportunities that you have for someone who is in your specific industry so like i think the relative path for a software engineer is that for someone who's already in software engineering is you can either become a software engineer for the rest of your life and a lot of people do that because they love coding they love solving problems and they end up very high in their company or they switch companies from time to time maybe go to startups and try out new things or a lot of times people want to go into the managerial position in which they go and become a program manager a product manager or they just become a manager at their company and we're an engineering manager for their team so i think a lot of people there's like a difference between like becoming a leadership versus becoming a software engineer and just coding and i think one of the other things for software engineering is that you can definitely be able to go into mba or you can start with a startup on your own and there's a lot of different choices that you can have with software engineering because you have the technical skills in order to i guess make a difference or make a change in the world i would say for consulting i'll do in a very consulting way or giving you three dot points you either stay or you go or you go and then come back so when you stay what happens usually is you just keep climbing up the ladder in the consulting firms you start off as a you know like a sort of a junior consultant go to be a senior consultant and become a case team manager where you manage a whole case which is what we call core projects with a client and then you keep moving up usually becoming like senior management or a partner of a firm which by which time you'll be managing you know a very big function of the firm more like you know being one of the global uh executive offer so that's always their pathway over there but a more common pathway is people will join consulting firms for a few years to accumulate uh experience your skill set and interpersonal skills and they hope helps they take what they learn what they experience here to go to startups to go to investing firms or to do not-for-profit or become like olympic athlete people down there before conference um and then you just you know do all the different kind of things and still remember that you're a consultant and you have this whole network of consultants from your firm to follow on to you if you want to like you know make business or opportunities happen and another thing which is i think very unique for consulting firms people like come and go why because think about it this is the industry that people like do uh you know for a living by solving different business problems how do you get the experience of solving different business problems well by going to different businesses so a lot of people hope out of consulting to run their company or be an executive and they come back fun fact one of my uh senior managers he was he started at my company and then he hopped out to start his own french dessert shop chain in new york because he's from france and then he came back and then now he does a lot of consumer you know uh cases and firms so that happens a lot so there's really a lot of possibility in how you want to do it awesome thank you so much for being here today with us peter hope you guys learned a lot about um consulting path in the software engineering path in general and hoping this video would help you to basically like understand or make a decision about your own lives comment below if you have any further questions for me or peter about consulting or the software engineering path comment below and i'll be basically be able to answer them as soon as possible and also make sure to like and subscribe for the youtube algorithm thank you so much for watching

00:00:07,001 --> 00:00:09,335
bain and company and it's a consulting firm

5
00:00:09,335 --> 00:00:11,832
it's actually one of the best consulting firms

6
00:00:11,832 --> 00:00:14,328
so i know there's a lot of people and students

7
00:00:14,328 --> 00:00:16,391
out there who are thinking about maybe

8
00:00:16,391 --> 00:00:18,887
switching their careers or thinking about what

9
00:00:18,887 --> 00:00:21,329
they want to do for the rest of their life so

10
00:00:21,329 --> 00:00:23,772
i wanted to create this video for you guys to

11
00:00:23,772 --> 00:00:26,160
give you a guys insight into our experiences

12
00:00:26,160 --> 00:00:28,385
in our respective fields and what kind of

13
00:00:28,385 --> 00:00:30,881
people that we think would look good for those

14
00:00:30,881 --> 00:00:33,324
specific fields to help provide you guys with

15
00:00:33,324 --> 00:00:35,440
information and help you guys make your

16
00:00:35,440 --> 00:00:37,828
decision on whether you should go into say a

17
00:00:37,828 --> 00:00:40,325
more technical role in software engineering or

18
00:00:40,325 --> 00:00:42,604
a more strategy role in consulting okay so

19
00:00:42,604 --> 00:00:44,993
here are some of the topics that i wanted to

20
00:00:44,993 --> 00:00:47,326
touch upon in our video and i will also put

21
00:00:47,326 --> 00:00:49,606
the time codes for these topics inside the

22
00:00:49,606 --> 00:00:52,048
description so make sure to look out for that

23
00:00:52,048 --> 00:00:54,273
if you're looking for a specific topic so

24
00:00:54,273 --> 00:00:56,770
another reason why i wanted to make this video

25
00:00:56,770 --> 00:00:59,212
is because when i was a student and also like

26
00:00:59,212 --> 00:01:01,709
after graduating there was a lot of times when

27
00:01:01,709 --> 00:01:04,151
i thought about like do i actually want to be

28
00:01:04,151 --> 00:01:06,593
a software engineer or what role do i want to

29
00:01:06,593 --> 00:01:08,927
go into so i made a video on switching from

30
00:01:08,927 --> 00:01:11,261
pre-med to software engineering but in that

31
00:01:11,261 --> 00:01:13,595
process i looked between investment banking

32
00:01:13,595 --> 00:01:15,928
consulting software engineering pre-med and

33
00:01:15,928 --> 00:01:18,316
like various other fields and because one of

34
00:01:18,316 --> 00:01:20,379
them was consulting i really wanted to

35
00:01:20,379 --> 00:01:22,604
actually become a consultant but i had to

36
00:01:22,604 --> 00:01:24,721
juggle between whether i wanted to be a

37
00:01:24,721 --> 00:01:27,163
software engineer or consultant so that's why

38
00:01:27,163 --> 00:01:29,334
i wanted to make this video for you guys

39
00:01:29,334 --> 00:01:31,613
without further ado let's get started okay

40
00:01:31,613 --> 00:01:34,110
first question so what kind of person is right

41
00:01:34,110 --> 00:01:36,444
for your industry and i'll get started so i

42
00:01:36,444 --> 00:01:38,832
think for anyone who's looking into software

43
00:01:38,832 --> 00:01:41,328
engineering the right type of person to go and

44
00:01:41,328 --> 00:01:43,553
become a software engineer you have to be

45
00:01:43,553 --> 00:01:45,670
pretty technical you have to be able to

46
00:01:45,670 --> 00:01:47,895
basically problem solve a lot so a lot of

47
00:01:47,895 --> 00:01:50,338
problems that are in software engineering you

48
00:01:50,338 --> 00:01:52,671
have to continuously work on so if you're a

49
00:01:52,671 --> 00:01:54,842
type of person who is a pretty technical

50
00:01:54,842 --> 00:01:56,796
person who likes making something by

51
00:01:56,796 --> 00:01:59,184
themselves or who has like the creativity to

52
00:01:59,184 --> 00:02:01,626
basically build projects and possibly want to

53
00:02:01,626 --> 00:02:04,123
make the world a better place or want to solve

54
00:02:04,123 --> 00:02:06,402
many issues in the technology field then i

55
00:02:06,402 --> 00:02:08,899
think software engineering is for you you have

56
00:02:08,899 --> 00:02:11,396
to be a person that's very like determined and

57
00:02:11,396 --> 00:02:13,729
also a person who doesn't like giving up in

58
00:02:13,729 --> 00:02:16,117
order to tackle these problems because a lot

59
00:02:16,117 --> 00:02:18,614
of these problems are also very hard to tackle

60
00:02:18,614 --> 00:02:21,056
in the end and sometimes you might not get it

61
00:02:21,056 --> 00:02:23,553
on the first try or maybe even 100 try so like

62
00:02:23,553 --> 00:02:25,941
people who are very technical and people who

63
00:02:25,941 --> 00:02:28,383
love to solve problems i think are people who

64
00:02:28,383 --> 00:02:30,880
are well deserved for software engineering but

65
00:02:30,880 --> 00:02:33,322
let's go to peter for consulting yeah i think

66
00:02:33,322 --> 00:02:35,710
thank you ray for all the i guess like trace

67
00:02:35,710 --> 00:02:38,152
that a good software engineer will have and i

68
00:02:38,152 --> 00:02:40,432
think consulting is definitely similar but

69
00:02:40,432 --> 00:02:42,765
different in different ways i would say the

70
00:02:42,765 --> 00:02:45,208
number one trade you will win a consultant is

71
00:02:45,208 --> 00:02:47,324
international curiosity like what we do

72
00:02:47,324 --> 00:02:49,441
basically is think about we are a brain

73
00:02:49,441 --> 00:02:51,883
outside a business or a company right we look

74
00:02:51,883 --> 00:02:54,380
at a company and it's problems from outside in

75
00:02:54,380 --> 00:02:56,605
and we try to help the business owners to

76
00:02:56,605 --> 00:02:58,993
really solve the problem to do that you'd be

77
00:02:58,993 --> 00:03:01,435
super passionate about like business property

78
00:03:01,435 --> 00:03:03,769
in general the financials how business talk

79
00:03:03,769 --> 00:03:06,103
about or think about markets how they think

80
00:03:06,103 --> 00:03:08,600
about their own employees and organization and

81
00:03:08,600 --> 00:03:10,988
all these kind of questions you need to keep

82
00:03:10,988 --> 00:03:13,213
drilling down those questions as a job in

83
00:03:13,213 --> 00:03:15,601
consulting and if you think that's something

84
00:03:15,601 --> 00:03:17,826
that you want to do i think consulting is

85
00:03:17,826 --> 00:03:20,214
definitely for you and i think another thing

86
00:03:20,214 --> 00:03:22,711
that's going to be very interesting is like if

87
00:03:22,711 --> 00:03:25,153
this is a job you're definitely going to talk

88
00:03:25,153 --> 00:03:27,595
to a lot of different people like even for me

89
00:03:27,595 --> 00:03:30,037
as a junior consultant part of my job also in

90
00:03:30,037 --> 00:03:32,425
spoken involves talking to partners which is

91
00:03:32,425 --> 00:03:34,814
like very significant at my own firm as well

92
00:03:34,814 --> 00:03:37,202
as ceos or other c3 people on the other side

93
00:03:37,202 --> 00:03:39,535
of the business so if you are not scared or

94
00:03:39,535 --> 00:03:41,978
even you enjoy talking about you know i guess

95
00:03:41,978 --> 00:03:44,420
things you learned to people and transferring

96
00:03:44,420 --> 00:03:46,916
your knowledge to people in different contexts

97
00:03:46,916 --> 00:03:49,033
in different positions consulting would

98
00:03:49,033 --> 00:03:51,530
definitely fall but will be a very good podium

99
00:03:51,530 --> 00:03:53,918
for you as well next question how hard is it

100
00:03:53,918 --> 00:03:56,034
to switch into career and your specific

101
00:03:56,034 --> 00:03:58,042
industry so specifically for software

102
00:03:58,042 --> 00:04:00,213
engineering i definitely think it's very

103
00:04:00,213 --> 00:04:02,601
doable to switch into software engineering i

104
00:04:02,601 --> 00:04:04,935
think for anyone of any industry as long as

105
00:04:04,935 --> 00:04:06,943
you go home and if you don't know any

106
00:04:06,943 --> 00:04:09,168
programming language it's also definitely

107
00:04:09,168 --> 00:04:11,448
doable just be sure to go online get a few

108
00:04:11,448 --> 00:04:13,619
certifications in a specific programming

109
00:04:13,619 --> 00:04:16,061
language or learn a programming language do a

110
00:04:16,061 --> 00:04:18,558
few side projects and get as much exposures as

111
00:04:18,558 --> 00:04:20,674
you can to the technical space and then

112
00:04:20,674 --> 00:04:23,117
basically start networking interviewing and i

113
00:04:23,117 --> 00:04:25,342
definitely think you'll be able to land a

114
00:04:25,342 --> 00:04:27,784
position in the software engineering industry

115
00:04:27,784 --> 00:04:30,009
so i definitely don't think it's hard for

116
00:04:30,009 --> 00:04:32,452
those of you who are thinking about switching

117
00:04:32,452 --> 00:04:34,894
into a career in software engineering and any

118
00:04:34,894 --> 00:04:37,282
students who maybe think they're too late to

119
00:04:37,282 --> 00:04:39,670
switch into software engineering or computer

120
00:04:39,670 --> 00:04:42,167
science it's definitely doable and i have done

121
00:04:42,167 --> 00:04:44,555
it before let's go to peter yeah i think for

122
00:04:44,555 --> 00:04:46,943
consulting i would say the best way to break

123
00:04:46,943 --> 00:04:48,951
into the industry is if you are say a

124
00:04:48,951 --> 00:04:51,339
sophomore a second year or junior third year

125
00:04:51,339 --> 00:04:53,781
student thinking about going in this industry

126
00:04:53,781 --> 00:04:55,952
you know the best way is you can do some

127
00:04:55,952 --> 00:04:58,340
internships in business or even other things

128
00:04:58,340 --> 00:05:00,728
that you can again as i said before help you

129
00:05:00,728 --> 00:05:03,225
understand and solve complex questions in real

130
00:05:03,225 --> 00:05:05,450
life as long as you're doing that kind of

131
00:05:05,450 --> 00:05:07,946
stuff i think you definitely stand a very good

132
00:05:07,946 --> 00:05:10,280
chance going to consulting and for those of

133
00:05:10,280 --> 00:05:12,722
you with more advanced degrees if you are say

134
00:05:12,722 --> 00:05:15,110
a phd mba or sort of masters master's degree

135
00:05:15,110 --> 00:05:17,553
students you definitely have a chance as well

136
00:05:17,553 --> 00:05:19,887
going to consulting because these firms are

137
00:05:19,887 --> 00:05:22,112
always looking for students who have more

138
00:05:22,112 --> 00:05:24,608
sophisticated structure of knowledge or a very

139
00:05:24,608 --> 00:05:26,779
good sort of understanding of one single

140
00:05:26,779 --> 00:05:29,004
industry or vertical so i think it really

141
00:05:29,004 --> 00:05:31,067
depends on i guess your background but

142
00:05:31,067 --> 00:05:33,563
consulting is an industry that takes in people

143
00:05:33,563 --> 00:05:36,060
in bulk from different entry points especially

144
00:05:36,060 --> 00:05:38,285
after like the i guess like the end of an

145
00:05:38,285 --> 00:05:40,727
academic program so always on the lookout for

146
00:05:40,727 --> 00:05:43,170
consulting firms recruiting because they tend

147
00:05:43,170 --> 00:05:45,612
to come to campus and a lot of fanfare really

148
00:05:45,612 --> 00:05:47,892
big you know and then they have very clear

149
00:05:47,892 --> 00:05:50,388
recruiting timelines just like tech so i think

150
00:05:50,388 --> 00:05:52,668
as long as you're looking out for that and

151
00:05:52,668 --> 00:05:55,001
trying to crap your story and trying to you

152
00:05:55,001 --> 00:05:57,335
know keep solving questions you see in life

153
00:05:57,335 --> 00:05:59,832
and make an impact i think consulting firms so

154
00:05:59,832 --> 00:06:02,274
definitely would love to you know take a look

155
00:06:02,274 --> 00:06:04,608
at you and hopefully you can get into those

156
00:06:04,608 --> 00:06:07,050
firms awesome thank you okay so next question

157
00:06:07,050 --> 00:06:09,384
is a pretty good question that i was pretty

158
00:06:09,384 --> 00:06:11,555
curious about when i was starting off in

159
00:06:11,555 --> 00:06:13,997
figuring out if i should be a consultant or a

160
00:06:13,997 --> 00:06:16,385
software engineer it's what is the work-life

161
00:06:16,385 --> 00:06:18,719
balance at both these companies what is the

162
00:06:18,719 --> 00:06:21,107
workload of both of these industries i think

163
00:06:21,107 --> 00:06:23,169
there's a wide range of opinions about

164
00:06:23,169 --> 00:06:25,503
software engineering but i think relatively

165
00:06:25,503 --> 00:06:27,782
with the experiences that i've had i think

166
00:06:27,782 --> 00:06:30,170
software engineering has a relatively decent

167
00:06:30,170 --> 00:06:32,504
light to decent course load i have a lot of

168
00:06:32,504 --> 00:06:34,946
software engineering fans who are in startups

169
00:06:34,946 --> 00:06:37,226
versus top tech companies versus in legacy

170
00:06:37,226 --> 00:06:39,614
companies and a lot of them report to around

171
00:06:39,614 --> 00:06:42,002
basically just regular 40-hour work weeks or

172
00:06:42,002 --> 00:06:44,499
work days i mean work weeks and they basically

173
00:06:44,499 --> 00:06:46,887
can go and do a lot of the other things that

174
00:06:46,887 --> 00:06:49,112
they want to outside of the work and it's

175
00:06:49,112 --> 00:06:51,500
really helpful because a lot of these people

176
00:06:51,500 --> 00:06:53,888
they have other hobbies and stuff but on the

177
00:06:53,888 --> 00:06:56,004
caveat i do know there's some teams and

178
00:06:56,004 --> 00:06:58,392
there's some various companies who do have a

179
00:06:58,392 --> 00:07:00,780
more worse work-life balance and they work a

180
00:07:00,780 --> 00:07:03,114
lot longer whether it's for on-call or it's

181
00:07:03,114 --> 00:07:05,502
for specific projects to meet deadlines so i

182
00:07:05,502 --> 00:07:07,619
think that turns people off a lot but i

183
00:07:07,619 --> 00:07:09,953
definitely don't think work like balance is

184
00:07:09,953 --> 00:07:12,395
something that you should be turned off about

185
00:07:12,395 --> 00:07:14,349
about software engineering because i

186
00:07:14,349 --> 00:07:16,303
definitely think that if you want to

187
00:07:16,303 --> 00:07:18,799
prioritize software engineering you'll be able

188
00:07:18,799 --> 00:07:21,187
to definitely find a company and a team that

189
00:07:21,187 --> 00:07:23,521
will suit your needs yeah i will say on the

190
00:07:23,521 --> 00:07:25,909
consulting side the short answer is slightly

191
00:07:25,909 --> 00:07:27,971
longer on average work within software

192
00:07:27,971 --> 00:07:30,305
engineers but still a pretty good work-life

193
00:07:30,305 --> 00:07:32,639
balance compared to similar industries so i

194
00:07:32,639 --> 00:07:34,864
think one key difference between software

195
00:07:34,864 --> 00:07:36,926
engineering and consulting is software

196
00:07:36,926 --> 00:07:39,152
engineering you tend to work for your own

197
00:07:39,152 --> 00:07:41,431
company whereas consulting and some of the

198
00:07:41,431 --> 00:07:43,928
other industries that people call professional

199
00:07:43,928 --> 00:07:46,261
services you your clients are companies you

200
00:07:46,261 --> 00:07:48,432
work for a consulting firm sure but your

201
00:07:48,432 --> 00:07:50,766
company as a whole work for another company

202
00:07:50,766 --> 00:07:53,154
and that brings like a little bit of i guess

203
00:07:53,154 --> 00:07:55,651
up and downs and swings in your hours like for

204
00:07:55,651 --> 00:07:58,039
me i would expect something like i would say

205
00:07:58,039 --> 00:08:00,535
50 to maybe 55 hours per week but it can swing

206
00:08:00,535 --> 00:08:03,032
from time to time like worst times it would be

207
00:08:03,032 --> 00:08:05,474
something like over 60 but sometimes it could

208
00:08:05,474 --> 00:08:07,916
also be under 50. but that being said i would

209
00:08:07,916 --> 00:08:10,413
say i still have quite a bit of time just like

210
00:08:10,413 --> 00:08:12,910
chilling like like when i get up work and when

211
00:08:12,910 --> 00:08:15,406
i live with randy like i also do some stuff we

212
00:08:15,406 --> 00:08:17,903
do we watch tv together i also you know i read

213
00:08:17,903 --> 00:08:19,965
a lot of books i want i also run other

214
00:08:19,965 --> 00:08:22,245
communities and like you know social media

215
00:08:22,245 --> 00:08:24,578
groups outside of consulting and i know for

216
00:08:24,578 --> 00:08:26,749
fact that some of my colleagues they run

217
00:08:26,749 --> 00:08:29,083
podcasts they work for non-for-profits they

218
00:08:29,083 --> 00:08:31,580
even work for you know other interest projects

219
00:08:31,580 --> 00:08:33,968
anything from like being a tour guide in new

220
00:08:33,968 --> 00:08:36,247
york city to like mapping out trees in the

221
00:08:36,247 --> 00:08:38,689
parks downstairs so like it's really like you

222
00:08:38,689 --> 00:08:40,915
have a lot to do and i would say one more

223
00:08:40,915 --> 00:08:43,140
thing that's different from tech which is

224
00:08:43,140 --> 00:08:45,148
consulting allows you to travel a lot

225
00:08:45,148 --> 00:08:47,645
obviously 2020 is a little bit of a bummer but

226
00:08:47,645 --> 00:08:49,978
usually like consulting especially you work

227
00:08:49,978 --> 00:08:52,258
for clients elsewhere we are talking about

228
00:08:52,258 --> 00:08:54,700
like flying in and out like of your home city

229
00:08:54,700 --> 00:08:57,034
on a weekly basis so i could be in new york

230
00:08:57,034 --> 00:08:59,368
you know monday morning to attend a meeting

231
00:08:59,368 --> 00:09:01,756
catch a flight in the afternoon to go to san

232
00:09:01,756 --> 00:09:04,089
francisco stay in san francisco with client

233
00:09:04,089 --> 00:09:06,315
for three days come back from the ufo and

234
00:09:06,315 --> 00:09:08,594
happy hour on friday so it's very location

235
00:09:08,594 --> 00:09:10,928
flexible i guess not flexible location like

236
00:09:10,928 --> 00:09:13,370
fluid which is really cool if you are not you

237
00:09:13,370 --> 00:09:15,704
know if one of those people want to explore

238
00:09:15,704 --> 00:09:18,200
the world with consulting the next question is

239
00:09:18,200 --> 00:09:20,426
a question that a lot of you guys i guess

240
00:09:20,426 --> 00:09:22,759
wanted to hear it's like what is the salary

241
00:09:22,759 --> 00:09:24,985
like for both of these industries and for

242
00:09:24,985 --> 00:09:27,318
software engineering i think it's there's a

243
00:09:27,318 --> 00:09:29,815
definitely a huge ban of salaries that you can

244
00:09:29,815 --> 00:09:32,149
have because i know that the average median

245
00:09:32,149 --> 00:09:34,265
wage for a software nigeria is around a

246
00:09:34,265 --> 00:09:36,653
hundred thousand dollars reported in 2020 um

247
00:09:36,653 --> 00:09:38,987
but there's a lot of companies that pay way

248
00:09:38,987 --> 00:09:41,484
less than that and a lot of these salaries are

249
00:09:41,484 --> 00:09:43,980
based only in the united states so essentially

250
00:09:43,980 --> 00:09:46,477
you have to work in the united states in order

251
00:09:46,477 --> 00:09:48,756
to get a very high salary in tech which is

252
00:09:48,756 --> 00:09:51,144
like why there's like silicon valley and all

253
00:09:51,144 --> 00:09:53,587
these huge booms and tech cities coming up in

254
00:09:53,587 --> 00:09:55,975
the u.s but for a top tech company and a lot

255
00:09:55,975 --> 00:09:58,308
of startups um new grads or like people who

256
00:09:58,308 --> 00:10:00,805
just recently graduated or a lot of people who

257
00:10:00,805 --> 00:10:03,084
just switched into software engineering as

258
00:10:03,084 --> 00:10:05,201
entry-level software engineers can make

259
00:10:05,201 --> 00:10:07,643
upwards of 150 000 and even more than that so

260
00:10:07,643 --> 00:10:10,031
there's like a huge range but definitely the

261
00:10:10,031 --> 00:10:12,474
salary for like a software engineer can range

262
00:10:12,474 --> 00:10:14,807
from like like below like 70 000 for like a

263
00:10:14,807 --> 00:10:17,033
lot of average software engineers to like

264
00:10:17,033 --> 00:10:19,475
maybe like top tech companies or startups can

265
00:10:19,475 --> 00:10:21,809
pay upwards of 200 000 and that was another

266
00:10:21,809 --> 00:10:24,142
thing that like actually motivated a lot of

267
00:10:24,142 --> 00:10:26,639
other people or a lot of my friends to go into

268
00:10:26,639 --> 00:10:28,810
software engineering because it's a very

269
00:10:28,810 --> 00:10:31,198
stable job and it provides you with a lot of

270
00:10:31,198 --> 00:10:33,586
monetary value with it and also i think that

271
00:10:33,586 --> 00:10:35,811
with software engineering like the growth

272
00:10:35,811 --> 00:10:38,308
there a lot of people talk about there being a

273
00:10:38,308 --> 00:10:40,696
ceiling for software engineering and that is

274
00:10:40,696 --> 00:10:43,084
true for a lot of companies but i think like

275
00:10:43,084 --> 00:10:45,526
as times are changing a lot of these like top

276
00:10:45,526 --> 00:10:47,914
tech companies and startups have been giving

277
00:10:47,914 --> 00:10:50,194
like more stocks out have been giving more

278
00:10:50,194 --> 00:10:52,690
money out so like as you work there for longer

279
00:10:52,690 --> 00:10:54,970
and longer you seem to be getting a decent

280
00:10:54,970 --> 00:10:57,466
amount of money in which you can have a really

281
00:10:57,466 --> 00:10:59,854
good life i would say for consulting um it's

282
00:10:59,854 --> 00:11:02,079
again like software engineering it really

283
00:11:02,079 --> 00:11:04,576
varies a lot depending on which firm you're at

284
00:11:04,576 --> 00:11:06,910
and which stage of career you're in i would

285
00:11:06,910 --> 00:11:09,135
say so if we talk about the entry level i

286
00:11:09,135 --> 00:11:11,631
would say uh the average or median salary will

287
00:11:11,631 --> 00:11:14,019
probably be a little bit lower than software

288
00:11:14,019 --> 00:11:15,919
engineering however still very much

289
00:11:15,919 --> 00:11:18,307
comfortable and should i say like about much

290
00:11:18,307 --> 00:11:20,749
more about average in i guess in the u.s at a

291
00:11:20,749 --> 00:11:23,246
better list i i would say that if you start in

292
00:11:23,246 --> 00:11:25,688
consulting like you tend to you have a pretty

293
00:11:25,688 --> 00:11:28,076
comfortable life compared to your peers like

294
00:11:28,076 --> 00:11:30,573
regardless where you start so and then another

295
00:11:30,573 --> 00:11:32,961
thing that's interesting about consulting is

296
00:11:32,961 --> 00:11:35,349
if you keep going in this career um like the

297
00:11:35,349 --> 00:11:37,628
the curve of i guess your salary growth is

298
00:11:37,628 --> 00:11:40,125
gonna keep going up so like even though in the

299
00:11:40,125 --> 00:11:42,513
beginning it's definitely not one of the top

300
00:11:42,513 --> 00:11:44,901
top paid sort of a career out there still if

301
00:11:44,901 --> 00:11:47,343
you keep going in your firm for 10 15 even 20

302
00:11:47,343 --> 00:11:49,840
years you will probably be in like a very very

303
00:11:49,840 --> 00:11:52,336
comfortable place by the time you're there and

304
00:11:52,336 --> 00:11:54,670
i guess also having a very rich and diverse

305
00:11:54,670 --> 00:11:56,841
life with a lot of stories to tell right

306
00:11:56,841 --> 00:11:59,012
because they deal with so many different

307
00:11:59,012 --> 00:12:01,074
businesses as well and i guess another

308
00:12:01,074 --> 00:12:03,571
interesting thing about consulting is like our

309
00:12:03,571 --> 00:12:05,742
i guess compensation is never fully just

310
00:12:05,742 --> 00:12:07,804
monetary a lot of times it's about the

311
00:12:07,804 --> 00:12:10,029
experience you have because with a lot of

312
00:12:10,029 --> 00:12:12,526
larger international consulting firms there is

313
00:12:12,526 --> 00:12:14,751
a building element you can go exchange at

314
00:12:14,751 --> 00:12:17,139
different offices at different functions and

315
00:12:17,139 --> 00:12:19,419
things like that it's not uncommon to hear

316
00:12:19,419 --> 00:12:21,698
people like from not just u.s or worldwide

317
00:12:21,698 --> 00:12:23,869
going to for example another office on a

318
00:12:23,869 --> 00:12:26,203
continent they've never been to or going to

319
00:12:26,203 --> 00:12:28,374
like even doing an externship in another

320
00:12:28,374 --> 00:12:30,870
company and come back to your company later on

321
00:12:30,870 --> 00:12:33,313
and also by the way if you want to pursue mba

322
00:12:33,313 --> 00:12:35,809
or like certain graduate programs your company

323
00:12:35,809 --> 00:12:38,197
will tend to sponsor you to do that and then

324
00:12:38,197 --> 00:12:40,694
have you back to the company after you're done

325
00:12:40,694 --> 00:12:42,973
with the program and i would say lastly uh

326
00:12:42,973 --> 00:12:45,199
consulting i would say just like software

327
00:12:45,199 --> 00:12:47,587
engineering is one of the really big theater

328
00:12:47,587 --> 00:12:50,029
industries into startup which means it's very

329
00:12:50,029 --> 00:12:52,417
easy for you to switch into doing startup or

330
00:12:52,417 --> 00:12:54,859
something even higher growth obviously taking

331
00:12:54,859 --> 00:12:57,084
a little bit more risk and i guess go for

332
00:12:57,084 --> 00:12:59,418
higher compensation so there is always that

333
00:12:59,418 --> 00:13:01,860
possibility there so what is the general path

334
00:13:01,860 --> 00:13:04,194
like or general opportunities that you have

335
00:13:04,194 --> 00:13:06,582
for someone who is in your specific industry

336
00:13:06,582 --> 00:13:08,699
so like i think the relative path for a

337
00:13:08,699 --> 00:13:11,033
software engineer is that for someone who's

338
00:13:11,033 --> 00:13:13,312
already in software engineering is you can

339
00:13:13,312 --> 00:13:15,809
either become a software engineer for the rest

340
00:13:15,809 --> 00:13:17,980
of your life and a lot of people do that

341
00:13:17,980 --> 00:13:20,259
because they love coding they love solving

342
00:13:20,259 --> 00:13:22,593
problems and they end up very high in their

343
00:13:22,593 --> 00:13:25,035
company or they switch companies from time to

344
00:13:25,035 --> 00:13:27,260
time maybe go to startups and try out new

345
00:13:27,260 --> 00:13:29,540
things or a lot of times people want to go

346
00:13:29,540 --> 00:13:31,982
into the managerial position in which they go

347
00:13:31,982 --> 00:13:34,479
and become a program manager a product manager

348
00:13:34,479 --> 00:13:36,975
or they just become a manager at their company

349
00:13:36,975 --> 00:13:39,255
and we're an engineering manager for their

350
00:13:39,255 --> 00:13:41,751
team so i think a lot of people there's like a

351
00:13:41,751 --> 00:13:44,194
difference between like becoming a leadership

352
00:13:44,194 --> 00:13:46,582
versus becoming a software engineer and just

353
00:13:46,582 --> 00:13:49,078
coding and i think one of the other things for

354
00:13:49,078 --> 00:13:51,032
software engineering is that you can

355
00:13:51,032 --> 00:13:53,420
definitely be able to go into mba or you can

356
00:13:53,420 --> 00:13:55,917
start with a startup on your own and there's a

357
00:13:55,917 --> 00:13:58,196
lot of different choices that you can have

358
00:13:58,196 --> 00:14:00,693
with software engineering because you have the

359
00:14:00,693 --> 00:14:03,026
technical skills in order to i guess make a

360
00:14:03,026 --> 00:14:05,306
difference or make a change in the world i

361
00:14:05,306 --> 00:14:07,585
would say for consulting i'll do in a very

362
00:14:07,585 --> 00:14:10,028
consulting way or giving you three dot points

363
00:14:10,028 --> 00:14:12,416
you either stay or you go or you go and then

364
00:14:12,416 --> 00:14:14,532
come back so when you stay what happens

365
00:14:14,532 --> 00:14:16,703
usually is you just keep climbing up the

366
00:14:16,703 --> 00:14:19,091
ladder in the consulting firms you start off

367
00:14:19,091 --> 00:14:21,099
as a you know like a sort of a junior

368
00:14:21,099 --> 00:14:23,433
consultant go to be a senior consultant and

369
00:14:23,433 --> 00:14:25,875
become a case team manager where you manage a

370
00:14:25,875 --> 00:14:28,372
whole case which is what we call core projects

371
00:14:28,372 --> 00:14:30,597
with a client and then you keep moving up

372
00:14:30,597 --> 00:14:32,985
usually becoming like senior management or a

373
00:14:32,985 --> 00:14:35,373
partner of a firm which by which time you'll

374
00:14:35,373 --> 00:14:37,707
be managing you know a very big function of

375
00:14:37,707 --> 00:14:40,095
the firm more like you know being one of the

376
00:14:40,095 --> 00:14:42,374
global uh executive offer so that's always

377
00:14:42,374 --> 00:14:44,654
their pathway over there but a more common

378
00:14:44,654 --> 00:14:47,042
pathway is people will join consulting firms

379
00:14:47,042 --> 00:14:49,376
for a few years to accumulate uh experience

380
00:14:49,376 --> 00:14:51,709
your skill set and interpersonal skills and

381
00:14:51,709 --> 00:14:54,206
they hope helps they take what they learn what

382
00:14:54,206 --> 00:14:56,594
they experience here to go to startups to go

383
00:14:56,594 --> 00:14:59,036
to investing firms or to do not-for-profit or

384
00:14:59,036 --> 00:15:01,479
become like olympic athlete people down there

385
00:15:01,479 --> 00:15:03,758
before conference um and then you just you

386
00:15:03,758 --> 00:15:06,146
know do all the different kind of things and

387
00:15:06,146 --> 00:15:08,480
still remember that you're a consultant and

388
00:15:08,480 --> 00:15:10,759
you have this whole network of consultants

389
00:15:10,759 --> 00:15:13,256
from your firm to follow on to you if you want

390
00:15:13,256 --> 00:15:15,047
to like you know make business or

391
00:15:15,047 --> 00:15:17,435
opportunities happen and another thing which

392
00:15:17,435 --> 00:15:19,769
is i think very unique for consulting firms

393
00:15:19,769 --> 00:15:21,994
people like come and go why because think

394
00:15:21,994 --> 00:15:24,490
about it this is the industry that people like

395
00:15:24,490 --> 00:15:26,553
do uh you know for a living by solving

396
00:15:26,553 --> 00:15:29,049
different business problems how do you get the

397
00:15:29,049 --> 00:15:31,220
experience of solving different business

398
00:15:31,220 --> 00:15:33,717
problems well by going to different businesses

399
00:15:33,717 --> 00:15:36,105
so a lot of people hope out of consulting to

400
00:15:36,105 --> 00:15:38,547
run their company or be an executive and they

401
00:15:38,547 --> 00:15:40,610
come back fun fact one of my uh senior

402
00:15:40,610 --> 00:15:42,998
managers he was he started at my company and

403
00:15:42,998 --> 00:15:45,277
then he hopped out to start his own french

404
00:15:45,277 --> 00:15:47,611
dessert shop chain in new york because he's

405
00:15:47,611 --> 00:15:50,107
from france and then he came back and then now

406
00:15:50,107 --> 00:15:52,441
he does a lot of consumer you know uh cases

407
00:15:52,441 --> 00:15:54,721
and firms so that happens a lot so there's

408
00:15:54,721 --> 00:15:57,217
really a lot of possibility in how you want to

409
00:15:57,217 --> 00:15:59,714
do it awesome thank you so much for being here

410
00:15:59,714 --> 00:16:02,048
today with us peter hope you guys learned a

411
00:16:02,048 --> 00:16:04,436
lot about um consulting path in the software

412
00:16:04,436 --> 00:16:06,769
engineering path in general and hoping this

413
00:16:06,769 --> 00:16:08,832
video would help you to basically like

414
00:16:08,832 --> 00:16:11,220
understand or make a decision about your own

415
00:16:11,220 --> 00:16:13,554
lives comment below if you have any further

416
00:16:13,554 --> 00:16:15,996
questions for me or peter about consulting or

417
00:16:15,996 --> 00:16:18,330
the software engineering path comment below

418
00:16:18,330 --> 00:16:20,718
and i'll be basically be able to answer them

419
00:16:20,718 --> 00:16:23,214
as soon as possible and also make sure to like

420
00:16:23,214 --> 00:16:25,656
and subscribe for the youtube algorithm thank

421
00:16:25,656 --> 00:16:26,959
you so much for watching
